FAQ Becoming an Egg Donor
Egg donors are young, healthy women of any ethnic group, between 19 and 30 years of age. Future parents choose their donor based on similar physical characteristics to the intended mother, education, blood type, etc.
Thousands of couples from all over the world wish to form a family, but due to the challenges of infertility they are unable to have the children they desire. It is only through the kind and generous decision of an egg donor that these families can have a child of their own.
A typical process of donating eggs takes about 10 to 16 days from the start of treatment to recovery. Once a donor is selected, the donor will undergo a range of medical tests. Then we coordinate the synchronization of the donor’s menstrual cycle for the treatment. In general, it takes approximately one month to a month and a half to coordinate the whole process from the day a donor is accepted to the day of the actual donation.
The answer is yes. Oral contraceptives help us to predict an estimated menstrual period or to regulate the menstrual cycle of donors, as well as avoid the formation of cysts or fibroids.
If you use Depo Provera (progestin), you must wait until the injection effect ends. Additionally, two full natural menstrual cycles must pass before you start with the contraceptive pills. Our medical specialists will explain to you in detail the length of time you should wait.
The egg donation experience is different for each donor, but many tolerate it well. Since the treatment involves hormones, you may experience mood swings, breast tenderness, and/or mild nausea. In addition, you may experience some discomfort with injections and after follicular puncture or egg retrieval. You may also experience cramping or mild abdominal pain after recovery, but these symptoms resolve within 48 hours to seven days after the procedure.
Egg donation in Mexico is legal and is done anonymously, which means that the donor will not know the identity of the intended parents. Likewise, the couple who will receive their eggs will not know the identity of the donor, but will know her physical characteristics and any pertinent details of her medical and family history. After the procedure, you can choose whether you want to be informed of the results – meaning if a pregnancy resulting from the procedure will be the legal child of the intended parents
Once your follicles have matured, you will undergo a mild sedation. The eggs will be recovered vaginally by aspiration with a small needle. The process of egg extraction takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Once completed, you will be monitored at the hospital and will be discharged with the doctors’ approval the same day. During the process, we will need a family member to be there to assist you.
Yes, a cycle of egg donation produces only 10 to 15 eggs. A woman’s body has the potential to produce more than forty thousand eggs. Thousands of donors donate more than once and continue to have healthy families.
All expenses related to medical tests, medications, and procedures are funded by the intended parents who wish to purchase the donated eggs.
Each donor is advised on how often it is possible to donate eggs without affecting reproductive health; most of our candidates donate 3 to 5 times.
